Audiences and critics alike are loving this film – it officially broke Rotten Tomatoes top ratings of critical approval last year staying with a 100% rating for much of 2017 and has scooped a handful of Critics Circle awards too. But why? Maybe it’s because it’s the hugely enjoyable coming of age story of a gauche rebellious teenager, the self-dubbed Lady Bird, a comedy with a knockout cast at the top of their game. Maybe it’s because it stands out as an antidote to Trump Culture as The Guardian critic Guy Lodge suggests. And just maybe it’s because there’s a very special talent at the helm: Greta Gerwig, known best perhaps for her acting (Frances Ha, Maggie’s Plan, Twentieth Century Women, Jackie) has written the screenplay and directed the film. Lady Bird is hotly tipped for a rash of Oscar nominations.
