Think lush sets, wonderful fashion and glorious technicolor. Cynically we could say a melodrama about oil wealth, power and sex that paved the way for a number of US soap operas. But only at first glance. Do the superficiality of the design, the exaggeration of the situation and the characters combine to become a purposeful satire of Freudian themes so prevalent in the Hollywood films of the early 50s?
