Monos

February 11

High on a mountain in South America, eight teenage guerrillas guard a woman hostage and, almost as valuable, a milk cow called Shakira. The curious life of the regimented girls and boys is revealed against a surreal landscape of abandoned industrial buildings and panoramic views. Power plays and clashes spiral spectacularly when the teenagers are left to their own devices. Inspired by his native Colombia, Alejandro Landes’ (Porfiro, Cocalero) drama spellbinds with disturbing universality. At once riveting and exhausting to watch, it’s definitely worth the effort – this is one to watch for the 2020 award ceremonies. Genius casting and a cinematic tour de force.

We’re delighted to welcome Thomas Nordanstad award-winning filmmaker as guest speaker. He’ll give a perspective on this politically-nuanced film, drawing on his experience filming in Colombia (Remedios 2013) and making documentaries around the world.

“Brilliantly played by a youthful ensemble cast, accompanied by a breath-taking Mica Levi score, it is alternately sensuous and scary, thrilling and appalling.”
